Poem:While driving to Vermont from Maine to get her Furniture

Poland furniture in the back of a pick up truck in early November
Scariest part if done
Donit want to fall into the gorge
Route 4
Oncoming lights
Slippery road and shining reflector lights
West bound to start
East bound to finish
Drive 55 stay at the speed limit

Mount Tom Farmeris Market on the outskirt of town
Strip mall lights at the end of an autumn day
Maple trees and sugar bushes at every turn
Small town charm
Big city flair
iOnce I stopped and bought some flowers therei

“To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter… to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird’s nest or a wildflower in spring - these are some of the rewards of the simple life.”

This is how I feel when I’m walking Abbey during the day or evening and take a minute to really LOOK.

Ragged Sonnet: When in a Deep Depression by Leonard Nathan

Filed under: Poetry — kristen @ 7:36 am

When in a deep depression of the self,
I see on every side, on every hill,
like the lit mansions of the rich, success
of others, hear the echoes loudly praise
my rivals, feel my plodding soles sink deeper
in the cold ashes of hope, and feel
the tepid drizzle of self-pity stain
my cheeks, I think of you, dear friend, who scorned
the Valium prescribed because you thought
sadness was our wise companion, shadow
of later years and not good to deny;
and then, my heart, all but reconciled
to gravity, like a wing evolved for such
short flights, beats up again. But not too high.

“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.”

He Attempts to Love His Neighbors - Alden Nowlan

Filed under: Poetry — kristen @ 1:31 pm

I thought of this poem when a neighbor YELLED at me to put my dog on a leash yesterday morning:

My neighbours do not wish to be loved.
They have made it clear that they prefer to
go peacefully
about their business and want me to do the same.
This ought not to surprise me as it does;
I ought to know by now that most people have a
hundred things
they would rather do than have me love them.

There is a television, for instance; the truth
is that almost everybody,
given the choice between being loved and
watching TV,
would choose the latter. Love interrupts
dinner,
interferes with mowing the lawn, washing
the car,
or walking the dog. Love is a telephone
ringing or a doorbell
waking you moments after you’ve finally
succeeded in getting to sleep.

So we must be careful, those of us who were
born with
the wrong number of fingers or the gift
of loving; we must do our best to behave
like normal members of society and not make
nuisances
of ourselves; otherwise it could go hard
with us.
It is better to bite back your tears,
swallow your laughter,
and learn to fake the mildly self-deprecating
titter
favored by the bourgeoisie
than to be left entirely alone, as you will be,
if your disconformity embarrasses
your neighbours; I wish I didn’t keep forgetting
that.

An Ode to the Competitor in All of Us - Sally Edwards Triathlete

Filed under: Training Log — kristen @ 7:23 pm

“If you want to race fast, train fast.
If you want to race slow, train slow. ”

I read this today and it stuck with me all day; during a short run, a medium bike ride, and long swim.
