“The road to happiness lies in two simple principles: find what it is that interests you and that you can do well, and when you find it, put your whole soul into it — every bit of energy and ambition and natural ability you have.”
20 Mile Road is my new favorite route. It’s rolling hills and once I enter the Open Range it’s all uphill. Total mileage was 22 miles. A black bird attacked me on the way back; that was weird. It was a good ride but now I’m tired and don’t want to do anything for the rest of the day. To combat this I am forcing myself to go for a swim.

I just signed up for the Durango Half Marathon. Why? 1) to keep motivated on running 2) I really like the distance 3) to get me south and finally see Durango which I know I’ll love.

In the town where I was raised
The clock ticks and the cattle graze
Time passed with Amazing Grace
Back where I come from
Now you can lie on a riverbank
Paint your name on a water tank
Or miscount all the beers you drank
Back where I come from
Back where I come from
Where I’ll be when it’s said and done
I’m proud as anyone
Back where I come from
We learned in Sunday school
Who made the sun shine through
I know who made the moonshine, too
Back where I come from
Blue eyes on a Saturday night
Tan legs in the broad day light
TV’s, they were black and white
Back where I come from
Back where I come from
Where I’ll be when it’s said and done
I’m proud as anyone
Back where I come from
Some say it’s a backward place
Narrow minds on a narrow way
I make it a point to say
That that’s where I come from
That’s where I come from
Where I’ll be when it’s said and done
I’m proud as anyone
That’s where I come from
Back where I come from

New Rule: Eat breakfast exactly 2 hours before and no food after. I felt my breakfast during the entire run. Despite the food in my stomach it was a good run. It’s this type of trail running that I’ve really been training for. The hills were tough but I have my method for getting up them. My nemesis was there and he walked up all the hills. I was hoping to beat him this time but he beat me on the last downhill. My time was around 32:00 not too bad for mostly uphill at the start; I guess. I’d like to run faster but I’m not training faster.
21 days until the triathlon and as I’m reading my training books I need to be training at least an hour on each event (except maybe the swim).
“Jack and Diane” painted a picture of my life and my dreams,
Suddenly this crazy world made more sense to me
Well I heard it today and I couldn’t help but sing along
Cause everytime I hear that song…
I go back to a two toned short bed Chevy
Drivin my first love out to the levvy
Livin life with no sense of time
And I go back to the feel of a fifty yard line
A blanket, a girl, some raspberry wine
Wishin time would stop right in its tracks
Everytime I hear that song, I go back
I used to rock all night long to “Keep On Rockin Me Baby”
Frat parties, college bars, just tryin to impress the ladies
I heard it today and I couldn’t help but sing along
Cause everytime I hear that song….
I go back to the smell of an old gym floor
The taste of salt on the Carolina shore
After graduation and drinkin goodbye to friends
And I go back to watchin summer fade to fall
Growin up too fast and I do recall
Wishin time would stop right in its tracks
Everytime I hear that song, I go back, I go back
We all have a song that somehow stamped our lives
Takes us to another place and time
So I go back to a pew, preacher, and a choir
Singin bout God, brimstone, and fire
And the smell of Sunday chicken after church
And I go back to the loss of a real good friend
And the sixteen summers I shared with him
Now “Only The Good Die Young” stops me in my tracks
Everytime I hear that song,

“Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far they can go.”
Ran at Spring Creek then biked (gaining elevation over 1000ft) then ran again. Not long distances but I did it.
Hiked to the 2nd falls this afternoon. It was HOT. Most of the waterfalls and streams before the 2nd bridge were dried up. Abbey was so hot and thirsty she rolled around in a mud puddle. Just like old times. The trail seemed so different. It’s been a while since hiking past the 2nd bridge. Next time if I don’t run, I will not wear my trail shoes.
Next time I’m going to try running a bit of it. I can’t image mountain biking this trail. I haven’t seen any bikers, yet.
Yesterday a spoke snapped on my back wheel. Got it fixed today but was just not motivated to ride. Maybe tomorrow.

I’m signed up and the training begins today! Serious training.

4 mile run
Today will be a trail run then swim after work…. No excuses!!! 30 days!
I’m really close to signing up the Denver Danskin Triathlon in July. I’m nervous because I don’t know Denver well and how will I have my morning breakfast before a race if I am not in Steamboat????? Lame, I know. I have a few more details to work out then I’m in.
It’s not long distance and it’ll be good practise before the Steamboat Triathlon.
I need to work on my swimming a bit more and consider purchasing a wet suit soon.
Next weekend is the Spring Creek run. After work I want to do a longer run at Spring Creek and end with a swim. We’ll see how it goes…………
“To dream anything that you want to dream, that is the beauty of the
human mind. To do anything that you want to do, that is the strength of
the human will. To trust yourself, to test your limits, that is the
courage to succeed.”
Ran up Elk Park Trail after work. The beginning is still pretty muddy. On the first steep incline a biker carried his bike down. There were some big puddles but the run was good. I had to walk a few steeps but felt good and ran for just over an hour.
I’m off tomorrow and have a big training day planned: swim, bike, run. Triathlon is just 74 days away.
“Not all horses were born equal. A few were born to win.”
Finally got back on the bike this morning. It was cool 62 degrees but did bike for an hour in my very cute pink Mountain Chick jersey.
Hiked the Uranium Mine Trail with the dogs. Tried to run a bit but just not in the cards.
The weather is getting better and no rain today; finally. I’m anxious to start building up mileage running and biking.
Louise Erdrich switched from poetry to fiction. One of her first short stories began to grow in her mind and became her first novel Love Medicine, about two Indian families, the Kashpaws and the Lamartines. She created those two families and then went on to write several more novels about them and their imaginary reservation in North Dakota, including The Beet Queen, The Bingo Palace, Tracks, and others.
Louise Erdrich said, “Writing became a way for me to talk about myselfoor a characteroin a really personal, surprising manner without any embarrassment. I was brought up to be an incredibly nice person, but not everything I wanted to say was nice.”
I finished and didn’t stop: 2:21:16 for a pace of 10:47 per mile.
I felt really good in the run. Never really got out of breath. The trail running helped on that. It was a really great experience. At this time I would never consider doing a longer distance. This is the longest I would do.
Thank you for running the Steamboat Half Marathon.

“I have always known
That at last I would
Take this road, but yesterday
I did not know that is would be today. “
DIXIE CHICKS - “Wide Open Spaces”
Who doesn’t know what I’m talking about
Who’s never left home, who’s never struck out
To find a dream and a life of their own
A place in the clouds, a foundation of stone
Many precede and many will follow
A young girl’s dream no longer hollow
It takes the shape of a place out west
But what it holds for her, she hasn’t yet guessed
She needs wide open spaces
Room to make her big mistakes
She needs new faces
She knows the high stakes
She traveled this road as a child
Wide eyed and grinning, she never tired
But now she won’t be coming back with the rest
If these are life’s lessons, she’ll take this test
She knows the high stakes
As her folks drive away, her dad yells, “Check the oil!”
Mom stares out the window and says, “I’m leaving my girl”
She said, “It didn’t seem like that long ago”
When she stood there and let her own folks know
Only 4 days until the 1/2 marathon. I want to do a long run but don’t. When I get home from work I want to hike with Abbey. So I compromise: I trail run at Fish Creek. I’ve discovered a new trail and been running the various off shoots of the trail. It’s really steep in part but good hill work. 35 minute run today as the thunder, lightening, and rain started.
I got my Trail Running Magazine today and I’m really motivated to try a Fish Creek Fall Trail run soon. That first uphill is killer but practice makes perfect or something like that.
Friday I’ll do a long run in the morning then rest until Sunday.
