I’m chasing down all my fears and when I catch them they’re going to learn how to swim, bike, and run.

I’m addicted to this.
I’m an addict because it makes me step outside of my little worldo

because it scares me and because I don’t know if I can do it at times.

Because nothing is quite like the sting in your eyes from sweat and sunscreen as you cross the finish line of an event. *Oe..

Because there was a time in my life when I was an addict for other things—-I embrace this addiction wholeheartedly.

In this uncontrollable and unpredictable world, this addiction gives me a small amount of control in my destiny–of who I am, of where I’ve been, and of where I’m heading.

And I don’t think I can ever give that up.”

One Lonely Afternoon - Russell Edson

Since the fern can’t go to the sink for a drink, I graciously
submit myself to the task, returning with two glasses of water.
****And so we sit, the fern and I, sipping water together. …

****Of course I’m more complex than a fern, full of deep
thoughts as I am. But I lay this aside for the easy company of
an afternoon friendship.
****Yet, had I my druthers, I’d be speeding through the sky for
Stockholm, sipping bloody marys with wedges of lime. …

****And so we sit one lonely afternoon sipping water together.
The fern looking out of its fronds, as I look out of mine. …

Top of My Lungs by Natalie Goldberg

Filed under: Poetry — kristen @ 9:12 am

….
So even though I am unhappy
I throw back my old goat throat
and sing slowly
“Oh my darlin’ Clementine”
by the beautiful lake in Minnesota
as the pressure of the black night cold
moves in on us from all ten directions
I sing to the moon above the lake
“You are lost and gone forever”
calling the pure beast of loneliness down from the sky
with the old American song haunting city lights
“Dreadful sorry Clementine”
and though the very earth has swelled up
like an elephant with pain
I stand on its back singing
in this sad universe
where one lover leaves another for all time
and nothing to say with your feet on the ground

From The Secret Life of Bees

“‘I’ll write this all down for you, I said. ‘I’ll put it in a story.’ I don’t know if that what he wanted to ask me, but it’s something everyone wants - for someone to see the hurt done to them and set it down like it matters.”

“I watched him, filled with tenderness and ache, wondering what it was that connected us. Was it the wounded places down inside people that sought each other out, that bred a kind of love between them?”

I felt really good during the entire event; which is new. The key: eating a big breakfast and as much as I can during the bike. From the Daily Camera: http://www.dailycamera.com/bdc/county_news/article/0,1713,BDC_2423_4865896,00.html

Mtn Bike Elk Park Trail

Filed under: Training Log — kristen @ 8:30 pm

This afternoon I mountain biked with Jeff up Elk Park (VERY hard) and through Bear Creek and down Hot Springs Rd back to his house. It was only 7 miles but it was hard. It was fun going fast down the traverses on Bear Creek trail and fell hard on a steep, dry, curve. Same elbow and hip as last time. It’s gonna hurt tomorrow. I definitely like the downhill more than the uphill. Only 10 days until the xterra off road tri.

Spring Creek 9 Mile Trail Run

Filed under: Training Log — kristen @ 10:29 am

Saturday I ran the 9.5 mile trail run at Spring Creek. It was very hard. Time : 1.42.49.

The grueling 9.5-mile loop sends runners up 1,300 vertical feet in a 2.5-mile section, goes through dense forests to the top of Buffalo Pass, and turns them around at the Dry Lake campground at 8,300 feet for a downhill return on the popular multi-use Spring Creek Trail.
